'Flat Stanley' Headed for the Big Screen

He's been photographed with presidents and movie stars and is one of the most well-traveled guys on earth. Now Flat Stanley is going to be a movie star himself. Walden Media has acquired film rights to the series of books created in 1964 by Jeff Brown about the adventures of a two-dimensional boy stuck in a 3D world. The film will be live-action and the lead character, Stanley Lambchop, will be flattened with visual effects. I think most Stanley fans 'round the world would prefer a hand-drawn, animated approach. Who needs high-tech when it's Stanley? Certainly not the hundreds of people who create their own Stanley cutouts and pose him in front of photogenic people and objects. (Look, it's Flat Stanley with President Obama! At the Eiffel Tower!) In the first book, Stanley is accidentally squashed flat by a too-heavy bulletin board that falls on his bed. In his new one-dimensional state, he poses as a kite and as a wall painting to foil art thieves. And he doesn't have to pay for airfare: You can just mail him! The character has had an international following, largely boosted by The Flat Stanley Project, which began in 1995. Since then, home-made Stanleys have been photographed with the likes of Clint Eastwood and Jon Stewart and been the star of several YouTube adventures. Do you like the sound of a live-action Stanley?
